Prepare power, gear, and curve entry · CDL General Knowledge

8 min + practice · Original foundation lesson

Select the gear and speed before the vehicle enters the demanding section. A steep descent may leave no good opportunity for a late downshift. A sharp curve may overturn a high load even at a speed shown on a sign. Smooth starting reduces unnecessary load on traction and vehicle connections.

Rules and conditions

Select the proper low gear before descending a steep grade. Changing too late can leave the vehicle without adequate engine braking while speed builds. Reduce to a safe speed before entering a curve, especially with a high center of gravity. Heavy braking in a curve can cause a skid, and rollover can occur even at a posted curve speed. Accelerate smoothly to avoid rough vehicle movement and loss of control. Sudden power application can create traction problems or shift cargo.

Worked comparison

For example, a loaded truck approaches the top of a steep downgrade. The defensible response is: Select the proper low gear before descending. Compare this with the mistaken proposal: Wait until the truck is rolling too fast to choose a gear. Changing too late can leave the vehicle without adequate engine braking while speed builds. For example, a high-loaded truck approaches a sharp curve. The defensible response is: Slow to a safe speed before beginning the curve. Compare this with the mistaken proposal: Use the posted curve speed as a guarantee against rollover. Heavy braking in a curve can cause a skid, and rollover can occur even at a posted curve speed.

Transfer and self-check

Explain why a braking plan and a gear plan are related but not interchangeable. Trace the effect of entering a curve too fast with a high center of gravity. Compare a smooth launch with a sudden power application on a slippery surface.

WORKED EXAMPLE

A loaded truck approaches the top of a steep downgrade. Which response best follows the general-knowledge guidance in the official commercial driver guide?

  1. Identify the relevant condition: A loaded truck approaches the top of a steep downgrade.
  2. Select the proper low gear before descending a steep grade.
  3. Changing too late can leave the vehicle without adequate engine braking while speed builds.
Answer: Select the proper low gear before descending.
Compare the other answer choices
Wait until the truck is rolling too fast to choose a gear.

The proposal "Wait until the truck is rolling too fast to choose a gear." conflicts with this applicable condition: Select the proper low gear before descending a steep grade. It does not resolve the stated risk: Changing too late can leave the vehicle without adequate engine braking while speed builds.

Coast in neutral to save fuel on the hill.

The proposal "Coast in neutral to save fuel on the hill." conflicts with this applicable condition: Select the proper low gear before descending a steep grade. It does not resolve the stated risk: Changing too late can leave the vehicle without adequate engine braking while speed builds.

Rely on continuous heavy braking instead of selecting a gear.

The proposal "Rely on continuous heavy braking instead of selecting a gear." conflicts with this applicable condition: Select the proper low gear before descending a steep grade. It does not resolve the stated risk: Changing too late can leave the vehicle without adequate engine braking while speed builds.

Try it, then explain it.

Complete a short set without looking at the example. After each answer, explain which evidence or rule supports your decision and why the alternatives do not fit.
