Use slope and curb information when parking / LESSON 10

Use slope and curb information when parking · California DMV Class C

8 min + practice · Original foundation lesson

Parking has two separate questions: whether the location is lawful, and how the vehicle will remain secure. Curb colors regulate who may stop and for what purpose. On a slope, wheel direction and the parking brake reduce the risk that a mechanical failure puts the vehicle into traffic. Uphill and downhill positions next to a curb are not interchangeable.

Rules and conditions

When parking downhill at a curb, turn the front wheels toward the curb and set the parking brake. If the vehicle rolls, the curb can help stop it from moving into traffic. When parking uphill at a curb, turn the front wheels away from the curb, allowing the curb to catch a roll back. The required direction differs from downhill parking because the potential roll is reversed. A red curb prohibits stopping, standing, or parking, subject to specified signed exceptions such as authorized buses. A quick passenger drop-off is still a stop and is not a general red-curb exception. A blue curb reserves parking for an eligible vehicle displaying the required disabled-person placard or plates. An empty reserved space does not remove its eligibility restriction.

Worked comparison

For example, a driver parks facing downhill beside a raised curb. The defensible response is: Point wheels toward the curb; set the brake. Compare this with the mistaken proposal: Point the wheels away from the curb into traffic. If the vehicle rolls, the curb can help stop it from moving into traffic. For example, a car is parked facing uphill beside a curb. The defensible response is: Point wheels away from the curb; set the brake. Compare this with the mistaken proposal: Use the downhill rule and point the wheels toward the curb. The required direction differs from downhill parking because the potential roll is reversed.

Transfer and self-check

Draw the direction a parked vehicle would roll if its restraint failed, then choose the wheel direction that uses the curb appropriately. In a colored-curb case, state whether a quick drop-off is still a stop and whether an empty reserved space changes eligibility.

WORKED EXAMPLE

A driver parks facing downhill beside a raised curb. Which response follows the applicable California handbook rule?

  1. Identify the relevant condition: A driver parks facing downhill beside a raised curb.
  2. When parking downhill at a curb, turn the front wheels toward the curb and set the parking brake.
  3. If the vehicle rolls, the curb can help stop it from moving into traffic.
Answer: Point wheels toward the curb; set the brake.
Compare the other answer choices
Point the wheels away from the curb into traffic.

The proposal "Point the wheels away from the curb into traffic." conflicts with this applicable condition: When parking downhill at a curb, turn the front wheels toward the curb and set the parking brake. It does not resolve the stated risk: If the vehicle rolls, the curb can help stop it from moving into traffic.

Leave wheels straight solely because the transmission is in park.

The proposal "Leave wheels straight solely because the transmission is in park." conflicts with this applicable condition: When parking downhill at a curb, turn the front wheels toward the curb and set the parking brake. It does not resolve the stated risk: If the vehicle rolls, the curb can help stop it from moving into traffic.

Rely on tire pressure instead of the parking brake.

The proposal "Rely on tire pressure instead of the parking brake." conflicts with this applicable condition: When parking downhill at a curb, turn the front wheels toward the curb and set the parking brake. It does not resolve the stated risk: If the vehicle rolls, the curb can help stop it from moving into traffic.

Try it, then explain it.

Complete a short set without looking at the example. After each answer, explain which evidence or rule supports your decision and why the alternatives do not fit.
