Objective and core distinction
Power BI semantic models supply data used to build reports and visuals. A report can present multiple pages of interactive information; related presentation/distribution artifacts are not the underlying model itself. Within an analytical question, a measure is a numeric quantity being aggregated, and dimensions supply categories such as month or destination. Visual choice follows the question and variable types. Bars compare categories, lines emphasize time trends, scatter plots compare numerical pairs, and tables help readers inspect exact values. A chart that displays some numbers does not necessarily answer the intended question. Establish the intended comparison before selecting a visual.
Worked example
Fictional case:a repair cooperative reports total completed repairs by branch and month. The repair total is the numeric measure; branch and month provide grouping dimensions. If the manager compares independent branches with long names, horizontal bars can place readable labels beside magnitudes. If the manager instead asks how one branch changes across consecutive months, a line can emphasize the time pattern. Those are different views of related data. A scatter chart would require meaningful numerical coordinates for its two variables, not arbitrary branch-number codes. A table remains useful when the task is to find exact values rather than estimate them from marks.
Changed condition and misconception
Now the cooperative reports a branch’s share of all repairs. Specify the denominator and whether the categories are complete and mutually exclusive. A count is not already a percentage. Dividing by one competing branch, using only the largest category, or reporting the other branches’ share answers a different question. Similarly, a grand total is another numeric aggregate rather than a category dimension in the stated model. Display format and colour cannot fix an incorrect aggregation. Keep the underlying data/model distinct from the presentation so that a polished report does not become evidence that the data question was correctly defined.
Transfer check
Transfer task:a fictional report offers monthly totals for four locations. A reader wants both exact values and an overview of the change over time. Would one choice have to eliminate the other? Check basis:no. A line can communicate a time pattern while a table provides exact lookup; the actual design should serve the stated tasks without inventing a numerical relationship from location codes. Separately, name the measure and a dimension before drawing either. Explain the denominator before interpreting a category share. Attempt the four linked tasks and retrieve the cards to check the distinction among model, presentation, grouping and numeric value.
Try it, then explain it.
Complete a short set without looking at the example. After each answer, explain which evidence or rule supports your decision and why the alternatives do not fit.
