Measure areas and volumes · PSAT/NMSQT Math

7 min + practice · Original foundation lesson

Area, perimeter and volume measure different attributes of an object. Decide which attribute is requested before selecting a formula.

Choose a method

Draw and label dimensions, including the perpendicular height. Break a shape into simple parts or subtract an empty region from an outer region.

Avoid this trap

A border of positive width occupies area; the boundary length is perimeter. A slant height is not necessarily the perpendicular height required in an area formula.

Check and transfer

State the dimension of the answer: length, square units or cubic units. Similar figures enlarge area by the square of the length factor.

Worked example with a numerical check

Use the square dimensions in the diagram. What area in square meters remains outside the pond? Outer square garden side 8 meters; inner square pond side 4 meters. Find the outer square area and the pond area separately. Subtract the pond from the entire garden. The requested value is 48.

Contrast and diagnose

A triangular flag has base 8 centimeters and perpendicular height 6 centimeters. What is its area in square centimeters? Use the perpendicular height, not a sloping edge. Multiply base by height and divide by two. The requested value is 24. An incorrect approach: Add the provided dimensions.

Transfer practice

A rectangular water container is 4 cm long, 4 cm wide and 5 cm tall. What is its capacity in cubic centimeters? Try first. Check: 80. Volume combines all three perpendicular dimensions. Multiply length, width and height.

16

Report the pond area.

32

Report the outer perimeter.

64

Report the outer area without subtracting the pond.

Try it, then explain it.

Complete a short set without looking at the example. After each answer, explain which operation preserved the relationship and why the result makes sense.
