Bring a clear question and listen to the response · RBT2026 Foundations

5 min + practice · Original foundation lesson

Timely communication preserves context, identifies the concern and supports coordinated direction.

Choose information that supports a decision

A useful message to a supervisor identifies the specific issue rather than sending a broad label such as “the session was bad.” State the observable change, time, relevant condition and action already taken within the plan. If the question concerns an instruction, identify the conflicting wording or missing step. This allows the responsible person to answer the actual problem instead of guessing what happened from an emotional summary.

Attribute information to its source

A caregiver reports that the learner slept poorly; the technician observes three late starts to assigned activities. Those are two pieces of information from different sources. Communicate both in their appropriate forms without concluding that sleep definitely caused the latency change. Similarly, a teacher’s suggestion is information to share through the clinical direction process, not automatic permission to change the intervention. Respectful listening and accurate attribution make team input useful without confusing the source of authority.

Receive feedback as a specific performance task

Suppose a supervisor observes that a prompt was delivered before the programmed response interval ended. A useful response is to identify the timing step, ask a clarifying question if needed, rehearse the correction and follow the directed check. Defending the action solely because the learner eventually answered does not resolve the implementation issue. A correct outcome can coexist with a procedure error, and accurate communication should preserve both facts.

Transfer the message into a follow-through record

After receiving direction, document and implement it through the approved process. Do not alter an old record to imply that the revised instruction had already been followed. For an original transfer task, write a two-sentence message about an unclear data category: name what happened and ask how the specific opportunity should be coded. Then identify what would make the issue urgent. The goal is a clear, actionable request with appropriate timing, rather than adding more text without making the decision or uncertainty understandable.

WORKED EXAMPLE

A teacher reports that the current request target is difficult to use in class. What should the RBT do?

  1. Apply the relevant E.1 distinction: Team concerns and suggestions are communicated promptly to the supervisor without independently changing the intervention.
  2. Team information can guide clinical decisions, but the RBT does not independently revise the program.
  3. The response is interpreted within the stated observation conditions and RBT role; do not add an unsupported universal conclusion.
Answer: Relay the concern and observations.
Compare the other answer choices
Replace the target independently before telling anyone.

The choice 'Replace the target independently before telling anyone.' does not follow the specified observation or approved procedure. Team information can guide clinical decisions, but the RBT does not independently revise the program.

Dismiss the teacher because only clinic observations matter.

The choice 'Dismiss the teacher because only clinic observations matter.' does not follow the specified observation or approved procedure. Team information can guide clinical decisions, but the RBT does not independently revise the program.

Promise that the supervisor has approved a change that has not been discussed.

The choice 'Promise that the supervisor has approved a change that has not been discussed.' does not follow the specified observation or approved procedure. Team information can guide clinical decisions, but the RBT does not independently revise the program.

Try it, then explain it.

Complete a short set without looking at the example. After each answer, explain which evidence or rule supports your decision and why the alternatives do not fit.
