Paragraph comprehension / LESSON 10

Follow a stated rule and resolve what a phrase refers to · ASVAB

3 min + practice · Original foundation lesson

An inference should follow from the passage rather than simply seem likely. Work with the actual condition given. In the editorial mini-example “Every form received after Tuesday goes on the waiting list; Ari’s form arrived on Wednesday,” the rule supports placing Ari’s form on the waiting list. It does not establish that every person already on the waiting list submitted late; another reason for waiting has not been excluded.

Follow a stated rule and resolve what a phrase refers to

An inference should follow from the passage rather than simply seem likely. Work with the actual condition given. In the editorial mini-example “Every form received after Tuesday goes on the waiting list; Ari’s form arrived on Wednesday,” the rule supports placing Ari’s form on the waiting list. It does not establish that every person already on the waiting list submitted late; another reason for waiting has not been excluded. The diagnostic schedule passage likewise supplies an update rule and one dated change. Its conclusion can be derived by checking whether the change meets that rule. No assumptions about other sessions, additional changes or an unstated procedure are needed. Words such as every, any, after and only should stay attached to their original claims. They cannot be moved into a stronger conclusion merely because the result sounds reasonable. References require a different check: what earlier phrase is being discussed? Consider “Two narrow tabs held the folder shut. These could be removed without tearing the cover.” The plural these points to the tabs, not the singular folder. Read both the grammar and the described property. Do not choose the nearest word blindly if its number or meaning fails the sentence. The archive diagnostic distinguishes estimated dates added to a transcript from the original journal wording. Its reference question asks you to preserve that distinction, not decide whether an estimate is historically correct. Every reading passage in this guide is an original constructed text; its local statements supply the evidence. In delayed review, identify the supporting sentence or referent again, then change one condition and explain whether the conclusion would still follow.

WORKED EXAMPLE

Read the original passage. A workshop publishes its digital weekend schedule each Monday. Any change made after Wednesday is displayed in red on that digital schedule. Printed Monday copies are not revised. A Friday notice states that the Saturday start time was changed on Thursday; no other change is mentioned. The notice directs readers to the digital version for the updated time. Which conclusion must follow from the passage?

  1. The change occurred on Thursday, which is after Wednesday. The stated rule therefore requires red display on the digital schedule. The passage explicitly says printed copies are not revised. It gives no basis for changes to every session or for a second change to Saturday. Only the forward application of the rule is needed.
Answer: The digital Saturday entry displays the change in red.
Compare the other answer choices
The Saturday entry must have been changed at least twice.

The passage states one change; a second is not required by the facts.

The printed Monday copies now show the Thursday change.

This conflicts with the stated treatment of printed copies.

Every weekend session has a different start time this week.

One named changed session does not establish changes to all sessions.

Try it, then explain it.

Complete a short set without looking at the example. After each answer, explain which evidence or rule supports your decision and why the alternatives do not fit.
