Cloud consumption and deployment models · Azure Fundamentals

16 min + practice · Original foundation lesson

Separate deployment model, consumption and service ownership before making a cloud-cost claim. A connected public/private arrangement and a pay-for-use arrangement answer different questions.

Two questions before the product name

Cloud computing supplies computing resources through a service relationship instead of requiring every organization to own the underlying physical capacity. For this foundation lesson, separate two questions: where and for whom is the cloud environment operated, and how does the organization consume capacity? Public, private and hybrid describe deployment arrangements. Consumption describes the relationship between resource use and ongoing charges. Neither classification alone proves that a particular application is secure, available or cheaper over its lifetime.

Deployment and consumption conditions

A private cloud serves one organization and can be hosted on its premises or in a dedicated environment elsewhere. A public cloud is operated by a provider offering services to customers. A hybrid cloud connects public and private cloud environments that remain in use together. Multiple public providers instead describe a multicloud arrangement; do not infer that merely from a local private environment connected to Azure. Under a consumption model, quantities can change with use, avoiding the need to own all peak hardware capacity in advance. Allocating an oversized cloud resource continuously can still incur ongoing cost.

Worked example

A fictional city archive keeps an existing private-cloud collection system in its own facility while connecting a new Azure public-cloud search component. First retain both stated environments: calling the whole arrangement public-only would omit the archive system. The connected arrangement is hybrid. Next consider the separate capacity question. Search activity is concentrated around occasional exhibitions, and the archive can adjust the resources used by the search component. That is a consumption opportunity, but it does not establish a lower final bill: duration, quantities, retained resources and other charges still matter. The deployment label does not perform that cost calculation.

Change the condition and inspect the expense

If the archive instead used two public providers and retired its private cloud, multicloud would become the supported description; the original hybrid conclusion should not be carried across unchanged. Up-front purchases of physical infrastructure are the capital-expenditure pattern, while ongoing consumed services fit operational expenditure. This is a study classification, not accounting or tax advice. Serverless adds a further service-management question: an event-driven platform can operate underlying servers while the organization still supplies code and retains its business data decisions. Serverless does not mean that those decisions disappear.

Transfer check

A fictional tutoring charity rents Azure processing capacity but keeps the same maximum-sized resource quantity all year. It says that consumption pricing automatically means its resources follow demand. Is that inference justified? Try before reading: the billing relationship can be consumption-based while the chosen resource quantity remains unchanged. To realize demand-responsive use, the charity must actually adjust the relevant resources within appropriate constraints. Explain the difference between pricing model and allocation behavior. If you used the word cloud as proof of cost savings, revisit the missing quantity and duration assumptions.

Try it, then explain it.

Complete a short set without looking at the example. After each answer, explain which evidence or rule supports your decision and why the alternatives do not fit.
