Identify the role boundary
The BACB describes the RBT as a paraprofessional who assists in delivering behavior-analytic services under the direction and close supervision of the responsible supervisor or requirements coordinator. A credential is not permission to independently design or change every service component. In an examination scenario, distinguish implementing a clearly assigned procedure from selecting a new treatment, interpreting a new assessment independently, or providing advice outside one’s demonstrated competence.
Prepare for performance feedback
Effective learning of an assigned procedure can include instructions, modeling, rehearsal and feedback. A written checklist is useful, but it does not show that a technician can carry out the procedure accurately with the relevant materials and conditions. During feedback, identify the specific step, practice the correction and ask how performance will be checked. Treat a request for clarification as a way to protect accurate service, not as a reason to conceal an error.
Communicate a discrepancy before changing the program
Suppose a verbal instruction appears to conflict with the current written plan. Describe the discrepancy and seek clarification through the appropriate chain rather than choosing the version that is easiest to follow. If immediate safety concerns exist, use the trained emergency procedure. Otherwise, do not silently redesign the program while waiting. Record the direction actually received and the implementation that follows using the required documentation system.
Transfer feedback into a new opportunity
A technician rehearses a prompt sequence successfully during training but struggles to apply it during a session. The training success and the later difficulty can both be true. Report the context, request additional observation or rehearsal, and use only the competence and direction established for the actual setting. A useful self-check asks, “Can I describe the assigned steps, demonstrate them, record the outcome, and identify when to seek help?” This is a practice reflection, not a certification or independent competency assessment.
An RBT is assigned a procedure never practiced or observed. What is the appropriate first response?
- Apply the relevant F.2 distinction: RBTs provide services only after demonstrating competence and obtain training when a task exceeds current skill.
- Assignment alone does not establish competence; training and performance demonstration matter.
- The response is interpreted within the stated observation conditions and RBT role; do not add an unsupported universal conclusion.
Compare the other answer choices
The choice 'Implement it from the title alone and claim competence.' does not follow the specified observation or approved procedure. Assignment alone does not establish competence; training and performance demonstration matter.
The choice 'Ask the client to teach the RBT the clinical procedure.' does not follow the specified observation or approved procedure. Assignment alone does not establish competence; training and performance demonstration matter.
The choice 'Record perfect fidelity without attempting the procedure.' does not follow the specified observation or approved procedure. Assignment alone does not establish competence; training and performance demonstration matter.
Try it, then explain it.
Complete a short set without looking at the example. After each answer, explain which evidence or rule supports your decision and why the alternatives do not fit.
