Edit subject agreement and clause boundaries · ATI TEAS

3 min + practice · Original foundation lesson

English editing combines meaning with sentence structure. For subject–verb agreement, identify the head of the subject phrase rather than the nearest noun. In the original sentence “The label on the boxes identifies the collection, ” label is singular; boxes belongs to a modifying phrase. The singular verb identifies agrees with label. In “The labels on the box identify the collection, ” labels is plural, so identify is the appropriate simple-present form.

Find the subject and the clause before editing punctuation

English editing combines meaning with sentence structure. For subject–verb agreement, identify the head of the subject phrase rather than the nearest noun. In the original sentence “The label on the boxes identifies the collection, ” label is singular; boxes belongs to a modifying phrase. The singular verb identifies agrees with label. In “The labels on the box identify the collection, ” labels is plural, so identify is the appropriate simple-present form. A tense instruction is a separate condition. If a task requests the simple present, a grammatical past-tense completion may still fail that request. Check number and tense rather than treating every wrong option as the same error. The examples here concern the formal written-English conventions assessed in the stated task. They are not claims that every dialect or every communicative context must use an identical construction. For punctuation, test whether each word group can stand as a complete clause. Original pair: “The scanner warmed up” and “the operator checked the settings.” Both have a subject and a finite verb and express complete propositions. A semicolon can join them: “The scanner warmed up; the operator checked the settings.” A period can also separate them into two sentences. A comma plus an appropriate coordinating conjunction is another available pattern when the task permits adding one. A bare comma does not supply the standard connection between those independent clauses. A transition such as however is not itself a coordinating conjunction. Conversely, “While the scanner warmed up” introduces a dependent relationship and cannot stand alone as the complete second sentence in this exercise. Do not select punctuation by the pause heard in your head alone. Name the clause types and then check whether the proposed connection fits both the grammar and the task’s restrictions.

WORKED EXAMPLE

Choose the verb form that completes this original sentence in the simple present: “The list of specimens from the two cabinets ___ ready for inspection.”

  1. The head subject is singular list; specimens and cabinets belong to modifying phrases. Is agrees with that subject in the requested simple present. The other choices either disagree or fail the requested tense as well.
Answer: is
Compare the other answer choices
are

Are is plural; the nearby plural nouns do not change the head subject.

have been

Have been is present perfect with plural agreement, not the requested singular simple present.

were

Were is past tense with plural agreement in this declarative construction.

Try it, then explain it.

Complete a short set without looking at the example. After each answer, explain which evidence or rule supports your decision and why the alternatives do not fit.
