Keep a passage’s claim and its limits together
Reading begins with what the words actually establish. A main-purpose answer should cover the central action and its relevant limits. An inference should follow from supplied statements without importing an attractive outside story. ATI’s outline includes summarising, making inferences, interpreting purpose and using textual evidence. That scope supports the learning target; the following notice and deductions are newly authored, not adapted ATI questions. Original worked passage: “The garden archive will move its fragile maps to a dry cabinet during wall repairs. Visitors may still view digital copies at the front desk. Staff have not yet set a date for returning the paper maps to the display. The repair will be reviewed after the first week.” A defensible main-purpose summary is that access to a collection is changing during maintenance. It retains the continuing digital access and the uncertainty about a return date. The passage does not establish that the paper maps have been destroyed, that digital copies are permanently superior, or that a first-week review guarantees a return that week. Those claims use words related to the passage while changing what it says. To inspect an option, identify its action, time, strength and subject. A statement about a review is not automatically a statement about a completed repair. A statement about one collection is not automatically a statement about the whole archive. For a worked inference, ask whether a visitor can rely on seeing the paper originals next week. The supplied notice does not establish that availability; the return date is unset. This is a limit on the conclusion, not proof of indefinite closure. Write one supporting phrase and one condition that would have to be added for the stronger claim. That exercise makes a wrong option informative instead of treating a familiar topic word as evidence.
Read this original notice: “From 12 May to 23 May, the library reading room will close while workers repair its roof. Borrowing continues through the east entrance. Two foyer desks will support short visits, but they do not replace the reading room’s group-study capacity. Staff will review the temporary arrangement after two weeks.” What is the notice’s main purpose?
- The notice announces a dated closure, retained borrowing and a limited alternative. It does not claim a permanent replacement, superior study method or measured improvement. This conclusion comes from the original passage, not outside library policy.
Compare the other answer choices
The desks are a limited alternative, not a stated preference over group study.
The notice concerns temporary access and does not announce this permanent replacement.
The repair is announced; no completed evaluation or measured improvement is supplied.
Try it, then explain it.
Complete a short set without looking at the example. After each answer, explain which evidence or rule supports your decision and why the alternatives do not fit.
