Instance count and placement are separate
Virtual Machine Scale Sets manage groups of VM instances and support increasing or decreasing their number according to demand or a schedule. A load balancer can distribute traffic among instances without creating additional capacity by itself. An availability set addresses placement across fault and update domains for multiple VMs; its documented availability pattern uses two or more VMs. An availability set is not equivalent to availability zones and does not automatically place VMs in paired regions. If the stated gap is the number of instances, select a group-scaling capability. If it is a correlated hardware/update boundary for a fixed group, examine the placement mechanism. Neither choice alone proves that application state, recovery and availability objectives have been satisfied.
Private networking is not public exposure
A VM needs a network interface with its applicable IP configuration connected to a virtual network and subnet. Private connectivity does not make a public IP mandatory on every VM. A load balancer and dedicated hybrid connection can be appropriate for additional requirements, but they are not universal prerequisites for a single privately connected VM. Begin with the path the case actually requires. A proposal to add a public endpoint merely because the workload runs in a cloud confuses hosting location with reachability. Conversely, naming a virtual network does not describe all authentication or application-layer protections. These are distinct decisions that still need their own evidence.
Choose the storage combination before the interface
A standard general-purpose v2 account supports blobs, file shares, queues and tables. Premium account categories have narrower storage purposes. A case asking for that combination should be answered from supported services rather than an unsupported belief that the word premium means best for everything. Once the data location is chosen, distinguish tools from access rights. AzCopy is a command-line copy utility; Storage Explorer is a standalone graphical application for interacting with storage. Installing either tool does not independently grant an action that the case says the identity is not authorized to perform. The appropriate authorization depends on the operation; changing the interface is not itself a role assignment.
Ongoing synchronization differs from initial movement
Azure File Sync supports centralizing file shares in Azure Files while retaining a Windows file server experience and optional cloud tiering/local caching. That is an ongoing relationship, not just an initial copy. Azure Data Box supports physical movement of large datasets where network connectivity is limited or unavailable. Azure Migrate supports discovering and assessing supported workloads and planning/executing their migration. These purposes can occur in different parts of a transition. A readiness assessment does not physically transport data; a shipment does not by itself maintain ongoing synchronization; a one-time copy does not become continuing synchronization simply because its destination is a cloud service.
Worked example: a regional archive
A fictional regional archive has three problems. Its web service needs more VM instances during registration periods. Its office keeps using Windows file servers but wants central shares in Azure Files. A large historical dataset cannot be transferred over the available network in the migration window. Separate those constraints before choosing tools. Scale Sets address the instance-group scaling responsibility. File Sync addresses the continuing file-server/cloud-share relationship. Data Box is relevant to the constrained initial physical transfer. These are three different jobs. The archive should not select one familiar migration product and assume it supplies all three. It must also plan supported data formats, permissions, security and operational validation; those detailed implementation checks are outside this foundation case.
Challenge the nearest alternative
Suppose a colleague replaces the archive’s proposed Scale Set with a load balancer in front of a fixed VM group. Ask which part of the original requirement remains unmet: traffic distribution may improve, but the group count still cannot change merely because the balancer exists. Suppose another colleague replaces File Sync with one AzCopy run. The initial data may move, but the continuing synchronization/cache relationship remains unspecified. These challenges compare plausible neighboring decisions. They are more useful than saying that a completely unrelated service cannot solve the problem. When an alternative could satisfy a broader version of the task, use the explicit condition that distinguishes the current case.
Transfer check and explanation
A second fictional office has enough network capacity for a one-time scripted copy to supported storage targets, and a support analyst wants a graphical storage browser. Select the tool purpose for each need. Now change the requirement to continuing Windows file-server synchronization with optional local caching. Explain why the one-time copy tool no longer establishes the full required relationship. Finally, the analyst can list objects but lacks a write action under unchanged access assignments. Would installing a different client grant that action? Answer before reading the basis. AzCopy matches the scripted-copy interface, Storage Explorer the graphical interface, and File Sync the ongoing hybrid file relationship. Client installation does not grant the stated missing authorization. Treat a successful tool launch as evidence of installation, not evidence of access or a completed migration.
Try it, then explain it.
Complete a short set without looking at the example. After each answer, explain which evidence or rule supports your decision and why the alternatives do not fit.
