HESI A2: Study Guide & Free Lessons

Short lessons, worked examples, and practice that connects.

01
Reading

Set your scope, then identify the main idea

This guide supports selected academic foundations for the HESI Admission Assessment(A2). It is not a HESI Exit Exam or NCLEX review, and it is not a complete admissions course or an official practice examination. Elsevier’s public sixth-edition review contents name math, reading, vocabulary, grammar, biology, chemistry, and anatomy/physiology. That contents list is a preparation reference, not proof that every school requires every section. TCC explicitly distinguishes sections offered from requirements determined by individual programs. Gateway identifies program-specific choices and warns that recommended section times are pacing guidelines. Confirm your own program’s sections, timing, calculator rules, attempt policy and score criteria before treating any plan as applicable.

Reading

Limit an inference to the evidence given

A reading inference combines stated details into a supported conclusion. It is stronger than a random possibility but should not be stronger than the evidence. A missing entry can mean that information was not collected; it does not automatically mean that the condition was bad or the event never happened. When a writer defines a symbol or a blank field, that definition should control your interpretation.

Vocabulary

Recover word meaning from its local context

Context includes the words and sentences surrounding an unfamiliar term. Writers may supply a definition, a contrast, an example or a consequence that narrows the meaning. Before substituting a dictionary meaning you happen to remember, ask what role the word plays in this sentence. The same word can have different senses in different settings.

Grammar

Preserve grammatical form across a list

Parallel structure connects comparable ideas using corresponding grammatical forms. A list of actions can use infinitive phrases, gerund phrases or another consistent pattern. The aim is not to force every sentence into one template, but to keep the coordinated elements in the relationship the sentence establishes. Meaning and form must agree.

Mathematics

Track which quantity a fraction acts on

A fraction of a quantity is a multiplication relationship. In a sequence, the quantity can change before the next fraction is applied. Label the base at every step: original inventory, quantity removed, remaining inventory, and the requested final quantity. A fraction is not a fixed number of objects until its base is known.

Mathematics

Reverse a percentage change in the correct order

A percentage compares a part with a base. After a 20% reduction, the retained amount is 80% of the original base. Adding 20% of the reduced amount does not undo that reduction, because the two percentages use different bases. Translate the words into an equation before moving numbers.

Mathematics

Use both a ratio and a geometric constraint

A ratio describes relative sizes; it does not by itself give their actual lengths. A second condition, such as perimeter, can fix the scale. For a rectangle, the perimeter is twice the sum of length and width. Do not confuse that sum with the perimeter or the perimeter with area.

Chemistry

Separate proton identity, nuclear mass count and charge

Atomic number is the proton count. Mass number counts protons plus neutrons, while ion charge reflects the imbalance between positive protons and negative electrons. These three descriptions answer different questions. Do not add electrons to mass number or use neutron count as the element’s identity. Mass number is also not the weighted average atomic mass printed for a natural mixture of isotopes.

Chemistry

Balance coefficients without changing the species

A chemical formula’s subscripts describe the atom proportions within the species. A coefficient multiplies the entire formula. Balancing an equation requires equal counts of each element on the two sides. It does not permit changing the products’ identities until their arithmetic is convenient.

Biology

Follow newly labeled cargo through a specified pathway

In the usual eukaryotic secretory pathway described in the source, proteins associated with the rough endoplasmic reticulum move in vesicles to the Golgi for further modification and sorting. Secretory vesicles can then carry cargo onward. This is not a claim that every protein in every cell follows that route; the diagnostic explicitly defines the pathway for the protein under discussion.

Biology

Count joined chromosomes and copied DNA separately

A replicated chromosome contains joined sister chromatids before those sisters separate. The counting convention matters. In this unit, chromosomes are counted as still-undivided centromere units before sister separation. Copying DNA creates the paired chromatids; it does not by itself perform the later separation or a meiotic reduction.

Anatomy and physiology

Keep anatomical directions attached to the subject

Anatomical directions provide a consistent reference frame. Right and left belong to the subject, not to whichever side of the page the observer happens to call right. A human in anatomical position is upright and faces forward, with the palms facing forward. The simple figures here are paper models, not patient assessments.

Twelve actual guide units, not a complete course or 200-question bank. School-selected sections, timers, calculator rules, cut scores and admission criteria remain institution-specific. Not HESI Exit, NCLEX, clinical practice, dosing advice, secure-item recall or a pass/admission prediction. Qualified educator review pending.
