Keep the protected surface visible
A Defender decision becomes easier when the protected surface is explicit. Endpoint protection concerns devices. Office 365 protection concerns email and collaboration threats. Defender for Identity uses on-premises Active Directory signals. Defender for Cloud Apps concerns visibility, data controls and threat protection across SaaS applications. Vulnerability Management assesses and helps prioritize asset vulnerabilities/misconfigurations. These are neighboring purposes, not statements that one service can never contribute evidence to another service’s investigation.
Identity tools need environmental context
The word identity alone is too broad to choose between Defender for Identity and Microsoft Entra ID Protection. The former uses on-premises Active Directory signals for threat detection/investigation. Entra ID Protection addresses identity-based risks associated with its documented cloud identity context and can inform access decisions. Use the stated environment and evidence source. A case that omits them may not support a unique product choice; do not fill the gap by assuming every identity threat uses the same source.
The cross-product layer
Defender XDR coordinates protection, detection, investigation and response across supported security services. Its cross-product layer can join alerts, behaviors and affected assets into an incident story. The documentation limits correlation to products licensed and provisioned for access. A shared incident view therefore does not prove that every possible device, mail system or application is connected. Keep the focused component and joined context as separate capabilities: a vulnerability list is not automatically a cross-service incident narrative.
Worked example
Fictional teaching case: a book distributor sees related evidence involving an email link and a managed laptop. Its relevant services are licensed and provisioned. For focused email/collaboration protection, identify Defender for Office 365; for endpoint protection, identify Defender for Endpoint. To explain how provisioned signals relate within an incident, consider Defender XDR’s cross-product correlation. Do not choose just the email service for all three jobs merely because email appears first in the story. Equally, the joined incident does not establish that an unconnected application was observed.
Transfer check
Change the task to a fictional team seeking cross-SaaS visibility and data controls rather than a laptop incident. Which protection scope becomes the direct fit? Check basis: Defender for Cloud Apps. An endpoint may be used to reach the apps, but that fact does not change the explicitly requested cross-SaaS scope. If the question instead asked for a prioritized inventory of asset vulnerabilities, Vulnerability Management would address that different evidence need. The asset and requested output decide the distinction.
Check an alternative honestly
Name why the strongest adjacent option is useful yet answers a different task. Avoid claims such as every threat is blocked or all sources appear automatically. Feature scope, provisioning and professional investigation remain relevant. This unit does not enumerate every current Defender feature, teach portal operation, analyze live malware or claim complete coverage of the official threat-intelligence and portal leaves.
Use threat context without inventing attribution
Threat intelligence adds context about actors, indicators and infrastructure. A local log resembling one indicator can justify investigation without proving that a named account performed a whole campaign. A fictional analyst checks the exact domain, event time, device and correlated local signals before assigning a provisional interpretation. The Microsoft Defender portal supports integrated investigation experiences, but an integrated interface does not establish that every product is enabled, licensed or supplying a complete history. The worked decision therefore keeps context, tenant evidence and missing coverage separate. For transfer, consider a benign test that contacted an indicator-listed domain: the match remains a real observation, yet its local meaning depends on what action occurred and why. Avoid both automatic attribution and automatic dismissal. A useful report records the supported inference and the evidence that could change it.
Try it, then explain it.
Complete a short set without looking at the example. After each answer, explain which evidence or rule supports your decision and why the alternatives do not fit.
